Our name, THE JUDO SHIMPOKAI, was given to us (see History) and we were told that
it meant; The Progressive Group Of Judo. We have tried always to live up to our
name. However, being progressive also means change and change is not always welcomed.
The Judo Shimpokai was the first club in the Atlantic Provinces to introduce judo
as a sport for children. We called it a sport for children rather than a martial art for
children and our club has always been orientated towards the development of what we refer
to as Kid’s Judo. In effect we play judo! We have a written Kid’s Grading Syllabus, use Modified Rules, and have an instructional manual, Teaching Kids Judo, for teaching our boys and girls from 7 to 12 or 13 years of age. We believe we are somewhat unique, hopefully progressive, in this regard. Upon request, Judo Canada was given a copy of Part 1 of Teaching Kid’s Judo sometime in the 1999/2000 judo year. We are pleased to see some of our suggestions gradually come about. Presently our dojo is 75% kids from 7 to 13, 15% juveniles and juniors from 14 to19, and 10% seniors. We believe strongly that not only do strong trees grow from little acorns but also, if you show respect to a child the child will immediately return your respect. We teach respect in this way. In the recent past, two different individuals from our relatively small club have won the -71kgs. Juvenile Canadian Championship, also one has recently won the Ontario Open, Junior -81kgs championships. Another individual placed second and third at Canadian Juvenile Championships in the last two years. We like to think our kid’s approach works well, not only to produce excellent competitors but it also has introduced thousands of kids to our wonderful sport, and that’s our goal. Our club is operated somewhat differently from most clubs, we’re operated by two committees, an On-The-Mat Committee and a Parent’s Committee, each with separate goals, duties and responsibilities. Of course the two committees work closely together to meet the club’s overall goals. See our Executive Page for more information. Feedback and/or questions on the above is greatly appreciated from our readers. We are ready to comment.and look forward to hearing from you.
