May 6 & 7, 2003 - Canadian Juvenile and Junior Championships, Toronto A total of 275 competetors from 9 provinces participated - 60% juveniles and 40% juniors. Juveniles - 67 females and 94 males for 161 competitors and Juniors - 46 females and 68 males for 114 competitors. The breakdown of competitors by province: ON 74, BC 56, QC 41, AB 38, MB 16, NB 16, PE 15, SK 13, and NS 6 =275 in all. First, to report on our NB competitors: In the Juvenile with 10 competitors, our 6 boys won 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze while our 4 girls picked up 1 Gold. Not a bad showing - 4 medals for 10 competitors! Here are the 6 individual Male Juvenile results: In the 42kgs. with 7 competitors, Maxime Castonguay had strong 3 win and 1 loss day for a bronze medal. In the 45kgs. with 8 competitors, Manuel Thibideau won 2 and lost 1 to pick up a Silver medal. (8-person pools are the best -with 2 wins your in the finals!).Now Joey Tobin had a great day! In the 51kgs. with 7 competitors Joey annihilated the opposition. Joey went all the way with 5 ippons and 0 losses. An excellent showing for a Gold medal. Also, Joey was selected as the top male Juvenile athlete of the tournament. How to go Joey! Next, we had 2 competitors in a tough 12-man 73kgs. Andre Lessard had 2 win-2 loss day and Steve Breen ended up with an 0 and 2 day. Our biggest juvenile, Drew Chenier was in a 10-man 81kgs group and won 1 and lost 2. Now for our 4 Juvenile girls: In a 5-person 44 kgs. Monica Coulombe won 1 and lost 3. But next comes another great day! In a 13-person 48 kgs. Myriam Lamarche destroyed the opposition with 4 straight ippon wins for a Gold medal. Ontario had 3 in this category and Myriam defeated all 3 plus a girl from BC. This is the same Myriam who had a 5 and 0 record and gold medal at the 2003 Jeux Canada Games. No question, at her weight, Myriam is the best female juvenile in Canada today! In this same category Amy Merry unfortunately had a 0 and 2 day. Amy sister, Mary in a 14-person 63kgs. category had a record of 0 wins and 2 losses. Now for our Juniors. Here are the 4 individual Male Junior results: Our own Peter Montague, in a 10-person 66kgs., won 1 and lost 2 for 5th place. We had 2 people in the 81kgs. - Piers Doiron had a 3 win and 2 loss day for 5 place and clubmate Serge Goguen won 1 and lost 2, one of which was to his clubmate Piers. A tough draw where one had to eliminate the other. Piers eliminated Serge! In a 7-person 90 kgs. category we had our highest ranked competitor, Dale Lemon. It was just not one of Dale's better days - he ended up with an 0 and 2 day. Now for our 2 Junior Female competitors: We had no one in the 48kgs. (in fact there were only 2) and no one in the 52 or 57 but Jennifer Landry competed in a 12-person 63kgs category winning 3 and losing 1. She lost to the eventual gold medal winner,Jenny Bonsant of QC. One more win and Jennifer would have been in the final but ended up in 3rd place and a Bronze medal. Pascal Castonguay competed in an 8-person 70 kgs. winning 2 and losing 2 to end up with 4 place. To sum up -In the Juniors we ended up with 1 Bronze for 6 competitors. Our overall showing indicates that our Juveniles are strong and also that the competition gets tougher when you move up into the Juniors. It's a big jump, especially the first year there, but watch us next year! May 24, 2003 - Quebec dominates Canadian Senior Championships in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan In the female competition, Quebec won 6 Gold Medals out of 7. Ontario avoided a complete sweep by Quebec by taking the Gold in the +78kgs. In the male competition, Quebec competitors again dominated by taking 6 out of 8 Gold Medals. Saskatchewn took Gold in the -81kgs. and Ontario came up with a Gold in the -55 kgs. In all Quebec won 12 Gold Medals out of a possible 15. The home province, Saskatchewan, made a very strong showing for a small province by winning 6 medals and placing 3rd overall. They won medals across the board!
For New Brunswick, Shimpokai's Bruno Volpe won a Bronze in the male -81kgs. and Jennifer Landry, a former Shimpokai member now attending university in Montreal and working out at Nakamura's club, won a bronze in the female -63kgs. Congratulations to both! Unfortunately we are losing Bruno as he is moving back to Edmundston. He'll be greatly missed as he set a high standard, was very helpful, and added much to every practice. We wish him well back in Edmundston and hope he will drop in the Shimpokai from time to time. Other news! We are also losing two of our young club members. Ten years old, Tyler Conway and his eight year old sister, Nydia are moving to Halifax in July. Tyler and Nydia are now looking forward to finding a club in Halifax to continue their judo fun.
