The Coupe Barthedette
St. Hubert, Quebec
April 16 & 17, 2005

This is a big annual tournament held in Quebec.
Jason and Sara Stears accompanied the 2 young competitors to this tournament in Quebec. We had excellent results in 2-days of competition with 3 competitors winning 3 Gold Medals. You can't do any better than that!

Melanie Mason competed in the girls -36kgs. Category consisting of 3 green belts. She won her first contest by ippon with a beautiful O-Soto-Gari against a girl from Nunivit, but lost her next contest by a Yuko, but was awarded 1st place and a gold medal overall. All three competitors lost 1 match but Melanie had, on points, the best record of the three and therefore was awarded the Gold Medal.

Marcus Mason competed in the boys -49kgs. Category consisting of 7 blue and brown belts divided into 2 pools, one pool with 3 contestants and the other with 4. Marcus was the lightest in the overall category. In the 3-man pool Marcus, in his first match, was ahead by wazari only to unfortunately lose near the end by ippon. Tough Luck! However, not being discouraged, Marcus won his next match by ippon and finished 2nd in his pool. he then went on to defeat the winner of the other pool by wazari and moved into the final against the opponent he lost to in his first match. This time Marcus made no mistake and wone decisively with ippon to earn 1st place and a Gold Medal. A great day and a great comeback for Marcus.

Jason Stears competed in -66.5kgs. black belt only category. In a very tough category, with several tough matches, Jason successfully defeated all the other black belts by Ippon and picked up the Gold Medal. Now that's performance!

Thanks to Jason and Sara for coaching and also to Mr. and Mrs. Mason, who supplied the transportation, made the trip and created our cheering section. All in all, this 6-person group made a very successful tournament for the Shimpokai.

Shimpokai 2nd Go NB Kids Tournament February 27, 2005

On Saturday, February 27th The Judo Shimpokai held its second Go NB Kids Tournament. The competition at the Shimpokai saw 60 youngsters, 6 to 13 years, participate. The participants came from the three area clubs, Kiyokan, Quispamsis and Shimpokai. To ensure every kid got an equal chance, the competition was broken down into 17 age and weight categories. The purpose of these competitions is to give every kid the opportunity of competing on a equal basis without feeling the stress that usually goes when competing in front of parents and friends, most likely for the first time. The Go NB tournament approach ensures a fun-filled, non- stressful competition where winning and losing is downplayed. As wth our previous Go NB competition in December, every kid heard his or her name read aloud at the end of the competition and every kid was presented with a medal for taking part. Every kid went home a winner! We wish to thank the provincial government for its support through its "Go NB" program. We also thank the leaders of the other two clubs for helping out in officiating throughout the day and making the competition a complete success.

November 6, 2004 - Shimpokai Hosts Kids Judo Tournament
The big event involved approximately 80 children, boys and girls ages 7 to 12, representing all three local area clubs. The tournament was a little different than usual in that the focus was on having fun instead of worrying about winning and losing. This goal was achieved as both kids and their parents had a blast during the four hours of competition in a packed dojo. Every participant was named at the end of the day and went home a winner complete with medal.

Jason Stears (Shimpokai) and John Parent (Kiyokan) tackled the big job of sorting out the kids and making up the necessary age and weight divisions for the large turnout. The officials for the day were: Harold Stears (Shimpokai), Jason Stears (Shimpokai), Sara Stears (Shimpokai), Chris Long (Shimpokai), Gary Losier (Quispamsis), Paul Galloway (Quispamsis), and Jason Murray (Quispamsis). The coaches were: Jeff Porter (Quispamsis), Carry Murray (Kiyokan), and Carl Schell (Shimpokai). It was a great day and everyone went home feeling like a winner!

September 11, 2004 - Shimpokai Begins 45th Year
The Shimpokai opened for it's 45th year on Saturday September 11, 2004. There can't be many Canadian sport clubs, judo or otherwise, that have operated continually for such a long period of time. The first Saturday in September following Labor Day has always been our traditional re-opening date after taking a summer break. Being the first Saturday after the schools open, this makes for a great opening day. This year we saw more than 50 boys ands girls ages 7 to 12 showing up for registration. Most of these were returning from last season - great to have you back! The instructors for the kids' classes are Harold Stears, Jason Stears, Chris Long, Sara Wurts, and young brown belt, Drew Chenier. Old man Dutchie is also still about! The Juvenile, Junior and Senior classes have John Mallory at the helm. To sum up, the club is up and running for an exciting 2004/05 judo season.
